5 Players To Target In Fantasy Baseball

Writer's picture: Patrick McPartlandPatrick McPartland

Fantasy Baseball is a grueling task to keep up with, the waiver wire warriors come out real early and if you’re not following injury updates and advanced stats you can fall behind in a hurry. This article is filled with guys that are rostered less than 50% across ESPN leagues and could give your fantasy team a boost & ensure a chance at making a playoff push.

* Roster % collected on 5/16 via: ESPN

Juan Yepez / 1B/DH / STL

21.6% (ESPN)

Since being called up in early May Juan Yepez has been a staple in this hot Cardinals lineup and has proven his worth from the jump. Through 11 games and 46 plate appearances Yepez is slashing .366/.435/.585… that's good. His average exit velo is just above 90%. These numbers are obviously skewed off an insanely small sample size but the guy is mashing right now and has given the Cards no reason to take him out of the daily order. If he’s sitting in waivers, scoop him up now and hope for a Rookie of the Year run.

Hunter Greene / SP / CIN

28.6% (ESPN)

The rookie flame throwing pitcher for the Reds has had his ups and downs to start the year. There are some bright spots to Greene’s line that make him a worthy pick up. In 6 of 7 starts he has posted at least 6 strikeouts; including a season high 9 in his most recent 5/15 start where he carried a no-hit bid through 7.1 innings. Greene doesn’t give up a lot of hits. He hasn’t given up more than 6 hits in a start– with the exception of the 5/5 game against Milwaukee. It seems like Greene is settling into the MLB and we believe you can expect a high K rate and deep games. He can be a reliable SP in your lineup– hopefully, limit the walks and keep the ball in the park. It’s a shame that the Reds are awful this year because Greene will be a great pitcher.

Brandon Marsh / OF / LAA

25.6% (ESPN)

If you need a fast OF that hits for a decent average go pick up Brandon Marsh. The Angel rookie is off to a great start after being slotted into the Opening Day roster. As of 5/15 Marsh owns a .286/.342/.439 line with 4 HRs and 20 RBIs. We think that Marsh has the potential to be a 20/20 player by the end of the year; having already swiped 3 bags. If Marsh continues to hit the ball consistently, Maddon should put him higher in the lineup in front of Trout/Ohtani/Rendon. This will allow him to get more runs and stolen base opportunities.

Alec Bohm / 3B / PHI

41.1% (ESPN)

Bohm seemed to pick up right where he left off in 2021– not good. There were talks of the beginning of the year of Bohm platooning with new rookie Bryson Scott. Bohm has since turned it around and now posts a .311/.350/.437 line with 2 HRs and 15 RBIs. Right now he is slotted in the bottom third of the order, but if Bohm can keep hitting consistently, limit the strike-outs, and get the HRs going, Girardi might have to start putting him up higher and closer to Harper and Castellanos. This will give him more RBI opportunities and can be an everyday 3B for your lineup.

Taijuan Walker / SP / NYM:

47.8% (ESPN)

Walker started the year on the IL with a shoulder injury, thus delaying his 2022 debut with the Mets. He has a solid spot in the rotation with deGrom out until after the All-Star break and Megill just went on the IL. His first two starts were more so to get back into the groove of things, but still posted a 5:2 walk rate. He had a tough start against Philly, but bounced back against Washington throwing 7 innings. We believe the strike-out numbers will catch back up as he ramps up his workload. Walker can get you decent/quality starts and go deep into games.
