Week 1 Fantasy Football Forecast

Writer's picture: Vincenzo SciacquaVincenzo Sciacqua

Week 1 is finally here and we actually have football to talk about. This offseason has been crazy and difficult for Fantasy purposes but we got through it and are now ready to take on whatever the season gives us. In this series I will be going over multiple categories such as Rookie of the Week and my Must Start players among others. I will be going over major injury news and Waiver Wire adds (and underperforming players you can cut). This will be a guide to help you be able to set your lineups or even help you target players in trades.

Every Sunday morning the Upside Play team will help you set your lineups and make a last second waiver spot start over on Twitter so you can ask us your questions @TheUpsidePlay.

Start of the Week- RB Austin Ekeler @ CIN

Ekeler has an amazing matchup against a new look Bengals defense. The Chargers will need to use Ekeler more as a runner now that Melvin Gordon is in Denver. I believe Ekeler has a perfect opportunity to have a very productive week 1 and we could easily see him end up with 18 rushing attempts (ties his season high of last season) and close to 7 catches.

Bust of the Week- RB Melvin Gordon vs TEN

Melvin Gordon's first game with Denver is against a Tennessee defense who was top half in rushing yards given up. The Situation in Denver is a difficult one to navigate through and Phillip Lindsey will definitely be involved as he is coming off 2 great seasons where he rushed for 2,048 yards and 16 touchdowns. This timeshare could be an even 50-50 split and I would actually give the edge to Phillip Lindsey. Be cautious rolling out Gordon on Monday Night Football.

Rookie of the Week- RB Jonathan Taylor vs JAX

JT has been getting hyped up all offseason and it's easy to see why. He gets to run behind the best offensive line in football and has a quarterback who likes to throw to the running back. Marlon Mack is still atop the Colts depth chart but I don’t see that lasting for very long. The Jags defense isn't what it once was and if Taylor can get a couple nice carries that could sway Coach Frank Reich to keep him in. I see a 2 touchdown debut for Jonathan Taylor.

Breakout of the Week- WR Marquise Brown vs CLE

The Ravens offense was lethal last season and besides Mark Andrews there wasn't even a consistent pass catcher. Marquise Brown comes into the 2020 season bigger and 100% healthy. I expect the Ravens to continue what they had last season but with more targets to Brown. The Cleveland Defense won’t be able to keep up with Marquise Brown who will torch them for 150 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Deep Sleeper of the Week- TE Logan Thomas @ PHI

You might be asking yourself “who?” or “The former college QB?”. Yes Thomas was a college QB and he has the physical traits to succeed as a Tight End. His workout metrics are very similar to Darren Waller who was last year's breakout at the TE position. He is the top tight end for Washington and without a clear number 2 receiver there could be a decent amount of targets going Thomas’ direction. Keep a close eye on him and be ready to scoop him off of waivers.
